Environmental damage from pulp bleaching plants today is primarily a result of chlorine bleaching. Organochlorine compounds (AOX, dioxins, and dioxin precursors) are the primary pollutants, discharged in tons/day quantities. Color and toxicity of the effluent is also a problem.
Changing the bleaching agent from chlorine to a non-chlorinous oxidant eliminates the production of AOX compounds. Ozone bleaching allows much more of the plant influent water to be reused in the bleaching process, thus lowering water consumption as well as wastewater treatment costs considerably.
Successful industrial applications of ozone for the bleaching of virgin pulp have demonstrated ozone to be a powerful, cost competitive delignification agent. The excellent decolorizing abilities of ozone makes it possible to achieve brightness levels even with furnishes containing colored material, thus offering the perspective to lower raw materials costs for recycled printing and writing grades, for instance.
Ozone is now an integral part of bleaching sequences in totally chlorine-free (TCF), and frequently in elemental chlorine (ECF) processes.

3 tons per day complete bleaching pilot line (from unbleached pulp to bleached pulp) can be erected for below 100,000 Euros. This can be used as a pilot plant to optimize the sequence and application to bulk production.
